The following are in no particular progression order- they are as the ideas came.

1) Thickskin- Inject a serum that hardens your skin

2) Arachnoid- You've manipulated its genes now an ally to help poison your enemies.

3) Grapple - Muscular sinews, that you've manipulated, are now able to reach out and pull your foes within melee range (eq. tentacle tatt or perhaps pull from adjacent room).

4)Grip- You've enhanced the strenght in your arms and are now able to mangle limbs.
(Breaks the limb of your choice after holding for x amount of seconds..you won't be able to use your arms again until after the break.--> Writhing, some counterskill, or leaving the room stops the break)

5)Swing - attach your sinews to a higher plane of sight (equivalent to swinging in the trees)

6)Worm- A genetic mutation that now leeches off your foes.

7)Darts - With the right materials you are now able to launch darts at your foes- (possible poison/nanite delivery mechanism)

8)Blast - by altering genes within your brain you are now able to convert mp into bursts of energy to stun your foe.

9)LabRat - You've trained him well, Muches on your foes as if they were a ball of cheese.

10)Symbiot - This creature acts as an extension of you (and relies on you for life).

11) Genome Virus - Introduce your creation into your enemies system.

12) Reflexes - You've altered yourself in such a way that heightens your reflexive response times.

13) Purge - Your immune system is now able to fight off infections within the blood. (Cures blood-related afflictions).

14) Pacify- Inject a genetically engineered organism that attacks the aggressive portion of your enemies brain.

15) Anxiety- Introduce elements within your foes that insight fear.

16) Fly - Transmit diseases with your altered "experiments"

17) KillerBees - Paralyze your foes with these annoying pests.

18) Regeneration - ability to reintroduce vaporized limbs and/or gives the body the ability to heal itself

19) Leap - By altering the structure within your legs you are now able to jump to surprising heights.

20) Enhanced Vision- You are now able to view things at different wavelenghts. (a la Predator style-perhaps adding wavelengths as skill increases- but only one wavelength at once)

21) Firefly - not your ordinary firefly- ignites your enemy continuously.

22) Goo- Not all experiments go as plan- secrete this substance at your enemies to blind/bind them. This stuff stinks too...

23) Corybantic - agitate a portion of your brain that sends you into a frenzy (Increased damage- Lower defences (Loyals stay out of the way they know better)

24) Isothermic - You are now able to maintain your body temperature (Fire/Ice resistance)

25) Hoist/Toss - With your enchanced strength toss your foe in specified direction (Grant them the gift of temporary flight [if you choose up]-let them come smashing down to the ground).

26) Implant- Allows for the manipulation of genes by implant

27) Mite- The mite burrows into your victim and emits a wavelength enabling you to track your victim.

28) Aphtovirus - Send this genetic altered virus to your victims- Causes swelling of the throat and a variety of blisters

29) Engineered ear- Gives the ability to hear when normally you'd be deaf.

30) Doom- An effecient virus that ends in death but it must be introduced directly into the vertebrae. (Thus the victim must be prone- tempted to add other requirements). InstaKill

Some of the skills within are a bit weak and I wouldn't mind if this skill might be able to create some sort of marketable item. Might look at them again to see if I couldn't alter a skill to benefit allies as well. Didn't really think about room attacks (maybe goo).

It's nice to see a skill that isn't about nifty concoctions or shiny metal contraptions. I like it - it has a very basic feel to it.

Interesting skills. This seems somewhat similar to Yrael's biomerge though.

EDIT: Also, some of those skills remind me of Bioshock, and in some ways don't make senes. Killer Bees? What does that have to do with Genetics?

Genetically altered bees (after all you are commanding them0- Same goes for the other organisms under your control. Never played Bishock and I'll have to take a glance at Yrael's Biomerge. A draft is just that, the more input the better.

Thanks

Yep, yep, yep... Starting off with experiments on oneself may be fatal-- animal testing may save your life.

Not that I'm endorsing animal testing irl.

I really would like a subtype that concentrates on more biological technology than mechanical technology (for technomages, I guess). It's pretty cool and I've always had a liking to those kinds of concepts in games.

Isn't there going to be a Mutant subtype that does something like that already? I think Kunin said that it changes its brainwaves to have "funky" effects.

Yer already a mutant, Gaetele.

But seriously, this is basically a slightly altered version of Yrael's skill

I wish I would have read over Yrael's skill before I started at thsi- I could have avoided some the similiarities. The inspiration for this was actually a spider, some mixing of woodlore and apostasy with a scientific twist. I do see some similarities, but it really isn't that close. I have actual loyals that would be able to follow you around. I think I'll have to take another look at Kunin's chart for the areas needed in skill design, it was at times difficult figuring which area needed to be attacked/defended. As for balancing, this was just a draft and free flow of ideas.

Yrael did have some nice concepts though. thumbsup.gif

Is this basically how we should outline most skills? So that we are able to balance out how many of our abilities effect each body part either our own, our friends, or our enemies. Or is there perhaps a better chart wherein buffs, defences, and offences are taken into account as well as targetted area?

QUOTE (Kunin @ Mar 28 2008, 04:32 PM) *
Here's the basic outline for what I'm thinking about.

Three abilties for each category of differing levels. Each ability costs "points" which are gained with ranks in the main ability "DNA Manipulation". Each rank, of 15, gives one manipulation point which is required to activate the abilities. Point requirements for each ability are based the level of the ability, on average between 1-3 points. This allows the player to choose different abilities to have active at any one time, but with an overall strength limit.

Categories:

Arms

Head

Back

Feet

Torso

Legs

Skin

Minor Internals

Major Internals

I'll go through Yrael's ideas for abilities and fill them into the categories, but feel free to suggest some.

Edit: For quote bracket

Out of lurker mode to say this looks like it's really nice. I'd really enjoy using this skill, even with mere ideas. I can imagine a mad scientist trying to rule a world with this....most certainly not me whistling.gif

Hmm. I'd rename the skill to 'Genetic Engineering' or 'Biotech' instead of Genetics.

A couple of ideas based on existing biotech.

RNAi - RNA interference. By analysis of the subject's genes you can inject double stranded RNA into the target, shutting down the genetic pathway of your choice for a limited time.

Effect: One or more of target's defenses is removed, YOUR choice.

Genetic Engineering - Allows you to obtain DNA from an organism and safely express it in your body.

Examples:

Deinococcus radiodurans -- Microorganism that rebuilds its DNA after destruction of the helix from radiation.

Effect: Radiation Resistance

R. sylvatica -- North american wood frog. Specialized proteins allows it to freeze and thaw its tissues without cell lysis

Effect: Either Cold Immunity or Cold Immunity when in a Cryogenic State. You appear dead.

you do realize double stranded RNA -is- DNA
it's what the D stands for

Wrong!

Ribonucleic acid is a polymer.
Deoxyribonucleic acid is a ribonucleic acid polymer except missing a single Oxygen atom.

That's why it's deoxyribonucleic acid.

RNA is not DNA. RNA carries the message in eukaryotic organisms to the cytoplasm for protein synthesis.

*chuckle* There is more than just DNA!

RNAi: http://www.ambion.com/techlib/resources/RNAi/index.html
http://www.ambion.com/techlib/append/RNAi_mechanism.html

One way to induce the RNAi response is to literally bathe nematode worms (C. elegans) in a solution containing double stranded RNA specific for your favorite gene!

Also double stranded RNA is used as the genetic material for certain ambisense viruses. For example in the Bunyaviridae virus family (think Hanta virus) one of the three genomic segements of the virus is ambisense.
