I play. I've been playing for about 4 years now. I play at school practically every day and I'm pretty good. So far I've only found maybe two people I've yet to beat. I used to play on gameknot.com but lose interest and stuff. Lately I've been looking over chess puzzles and trying to find places to play quick games. What about you?

QUOTE (Vidal @ Feb 8 2010, 04:39 AM) I've always wanted to learn how to play chess strategically rather than just improvising, never had the time or a patient enough teacher though. +1. Doesn't help that most of my play was with a guy who preferred to play while drunk and also playing two bridge games at forty-five degree angles from the chess board so as to be fair to his opponents.

QUOTE (Whitney @ Feb 8 2010, 02:30 AM) I find board games restrictive and boring, I prefer the freedom conferred by more open and detailed games. I find board games like checkers intolerable and can appreciate where you're coming from. If anyone wants to play, let me know. I do have an account on chess.com.

QUOTE (Whitney @ Feb 8 2010, 08:30 AM) I find board games restrictive and boring, I prefer the freedom conferred by more open and detailed games. I play chess and open world games for two pretty different reasons. A game of chess is more like a match of wits given a "restrictive" set of rules. Like a competitive two-person puzzle. Open world games, on the other hand, are a place for me to just express myself, whether that's launching an RPG into a busy intersection, building a spaceship, or proselytizing heathens (or a combination of all the above). I have been known to play chess -inside- open world games as well, but that's a whole 'nother issue.

QUOTE (Vidal @ Feb 9 2010, 05:46 PM) What would be an example of an "open world game"? You may not have realized it, but you've opened quite a can of worms with that question. An example of an open world in todays market would probably best be fit by Dungeons and Dragons. Having never played myself, I could be wrong, but I think characters can be anything, including boring normal average people? In a graphical game, the best example is Eve Online. There isn't another example, really. In text games, the best example I know of would be Armageddon, although there may be a few others on par with it I don't know of.

QUOTE (Jay @ Feb 8 2010, 04:39 AM) I find board games like checkers intolerable and can appreciate where you're coming from. You don't like checkers? I guess I feel a bit of cozy repetition to what others may see as mundane. As for chess, I was in a chess club for a few good years. It wasn't much for strategy but I enjoyed socializing. Unfortunately it seems that when I play chess I actually do better when making fast decisions rather than taking ten minutes per move.

I don't have a rule book next to me so I can't be sure but I have always played sink all the boats to win; although in a real life it would cripple your military forces and make you easy pickings for the Dharma sharks. Also if I remember correctly they said that phrase all the time during the games commercials, so you are right about that.

Whoo, tabletop RP! You're all already familiar with the gist of it - imagine an event in an IRE game, only you're the only ones logged in, and there'll probably be Consequences if you shrug it off to go bash or sit around your house. As to playing boring ordinary people, D&D actually isn't that hot for it, it's a little more along the lines of Conan and Legolas - but there is a multitude of roleplaying games out there, and 'Ordinary People against Extraordinary Threats' is a very common theme. Warhammer, both Fantasy and 40K; Transhumanist sci-fi in Eclipse Phase, or more traditional sci-fi in Traveller; Dark existential horror in Call of Cthulhu, and personal horror in The World of Darkness; and generic systems like GURPS can very easily be tuned for plain ol' people. Check it out in its quickstart, it's free!
